10 Things You Never Knew About Aloe VeraAloe Vera. It’s everywhere these days!

Previously confined to health food shops, today Aloe Vera can be found everywhere and in everything!

Just walk into your local supermarket and you’ll see Aloe Vera added to all sorts of products from face creams and body lotion to yogurt and even toilet paper!

But do you know what it does?

You may already know that this green spiky plant that is great for soothing burns and nourishing your skin, but you may not know some of these awesome facts…

#1 Aloe Vera is one of the oldest herbal remedies

Aloe Vera was found on an ancient Egyptian list of herbal remedies, that is dated 3500 BC! And according to historians, famed Egyptian Queens Nefertiti and Cleopatra used it in their beauty therapy.

There are aloe vera carvings in the Rossyln Chapel in Scotland (featured in Dan Brown’s book the DaVinci Code) as it was seen as a most precious discovery.

Ancient Chinese and Indian cultures, as well as Greek and Roman physicians also used it. Legend has it that Aristotle persuaded Alexander the great to capture the island of Socotra in the Indian Ocean to get its rich supply of aloe to heal his wounded soldiers!

So Aloe Vera isn’t just a current trend, it’s been helping people improve their health and their looks for centuries.

#2 It's not a cactus

Aloe Vera's spiky appearance and the fact it thrives in desert landscapes means it is often mistaken for a form of cactus. However, it is in fact a Lily, belonging to the Liliaceae family.

#3 There are more than 200 species of Aloe

But only four or five of these have medicinal properties. Aloe Barbadensis Miller is the most potent and is the only one entitled to be called Aloe Vera (or True Aloe).

#4 You can drink it!

Taken internally, Aloe Vera has a nutritional, anti-inflammatory and immune balancing effect on the body.

The best gels are those that are pure and fresh from the inner-leaf and will tend to taste that way, so it’s perhaps not the most delicious thing you’ll ever drink – but the benefits make it more than worth it.

Choose a high-quality gel with 90% aloe or more, then you’ll only need to take a small shot each day to feel the difference. Avoid 'whole leaf' products as the outer leaf contains latex and other things that are not ideal for your health.

There are two classifications of aloe vera drinks. An ‘Aloe Vera Juice’ includes up to 15% aloe vera. An ‘Aloe Vera Gel’ contains 85% or more. The gel also contains much more mucilage - a viscous liquid that contains the polysaccharides that make aloe so healthful.

When you can, always opt for an aloe vera gel to enjoy the full benefits of this ‘miracle plant’; don't skimp on your health.

#5 It contains more than 200 nutrients

Aloe Vera is one of the original superfoods! Its inner gel provides a rich cocktail of nutrients that includes an impressive list of vitamins like antioxidant vitamins C and E and beta-carotene, and vitamin B12, as well as important minerals, including magnesium, manganese, zinc, copper, chromium, calcium, sodium, potassium and iron!

It also contains 19 of the 20 amino acids the human body requires. This includes seven of the eight essential amino acids that cannot be manufactured by the body and need to be consumed as food.

As if that wasn’t already enough, it also includes important long-chain polysaccharides which boost the immune system, lipases and proteases to aid digestion, powerful anti-inflammatory plant sterols, protective saponins, lignin, anthraquinones, which have painkilling and anti-bacterial properties and salicylic acid!

No wonder Alexander the Great was willing to fight for it!

#6 To work properly, it needs to be a primary ingredient

Aloe Vera is added to so many products these days – but often in such low quantities that it wouldn’t have any significant impact on your wellbeing.

When choosing an aloe vera product, take a close look at the list of ingredients on the back. This list is always in order of concentration; so opt for a product that has Aloe Vera listed as one of the first three ingredients to guarantee that you can enjoy the full effects of this wonderful plant.

#7 Its goodness comes from the inside

The outer leaf has few good properties, and actually contains some toxins such as latex and aloin, so when selecting your aloe vera products, favour ones those that contain inner leaf gel over 'whole leaf' products and look for the Aloe Science Council Seal.

#8 It's not just good for people with problems

Aloe Vera’s natural anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial actions, combined with its nutritional elements, promote cell growth and therefore healing.

However, its balancing effect on the body, gut flora and immune system – along with its antioxidant properties – mean that aloe vera can help everyone to enjoy a greater sense of well-being and calm, which in turn can help your body to become more efficient at defending itself from attack.

#9 Aloe Vera is great for animal health too

Aloe Vera works as well for animals as it does for humans! Many top domestic animal breeders and trainers include aloe vera in their pet care routines.

The Royal Veterinary College in the UK confirms that aloe vera was used extensively by veterinary surgeons in the eighteenth and nineteenth century, particularly in farm animals and horses. The plant even forms part of the college crest!

#10 It's an adaptogen

This means that it is a substance that increases non-specific resistance of an organism to adverse influences such as infection of stress.

In other words, this clever ingredient works out what you need most and where!

Where to find the best quality Aloe Vera products

I believe the best quality aloe vera products are made by Forever Living Products, a family-owned company that grows more than 60% of the world's cultivated aloe vera.

The company believes in sustainability and has never used artificial fertilisers, insecticides or pesticides on any of its plantations. It has also never tested any of its products or ingredients on animals.

I discovered the company in 2014 when my own health had taken a downturn. I lacked energy, my skin was dull and flakey and I was constantly sick. This all started changed when I started drinking their aloe vera gel each morning. When I followed the company's 9-day aloe vera cleanse - a product called Clean 9 - my health and vitality vastly improved and I joined the company so I could help more people access these wonderful products.

I have seen more than 100 of my clients gain the same results from the products as myself, so I have full confidence in recommending them to you too.

If you would like to try the products for yourself, you can visit my online shop at or if you are based in Switzerland, visit:

Great, I’m glad you’ve found the article interesting. If you’d like to know more about what aloe vera can do for you Dr. Atherton has written a great book about it – he has a PhD on Aloe Vera’s effects on the human body and Dr. David Urch has a great book on it’s effects on animals : )

Good Article! I have been a big fan of Aloe Vera for a long time now. Sometimes I buy the drink or make my own mixed with orange juice for a great cold and flu remedy. I also use it on my skin and in my hair. There are many uses and benefits from Aloe Vera and I for one will continue to use it.
