Why Working Harder isn’t the Answer … and What to Do Instead

The Art of Value Whispering podcast

If you’ve ever ended the week feeling like you’ve worked non-stop, yet haven’t really moved forward, you’re not alone.

Most business owners I meet describe their days as busy. Yet their hard work isn’t translating into traction and business growth.

They’re doing all the right things: showing up, posting on social media, tweaking their offers, but something still feels stuck.

To solve the issue, they:

* work harder
* squeeze in more hours
* tweak their plans (again)
* push themselves to be more disciplined

But the truth is: working harder isn’t the answer.

The solution is to build more momentum.

With momentum, each small thing you do adds up to steady progress.

Because success doesn’t come from our big breakthroughs or moments of brilliance. It comes from the small things we do well consistently. And that not only grows our business, but our confidence and the opportunities we attract too.

But here’s the challenge: knowing what to do and actually doing it, day after day, are two different things.

However, when you understand the five pillars of Momentum, and build these in your business, intentionally, everything starts to feel more natural and flow with greater ease.

The five pillars are: Alignment, Clarity, Focus, Support, and Accountability, and when they work together, everything changes.

Let’s unpack what that really means — and how you can start building smart momentum in your business today.

The Myth of “Working Smarter”

You’ve heard the advice: “Don’t work harder, work smarter.”

But what does that actually mean?

Most people think working smarter means efficiency — getting more done in less time.
But the deeper truth is that working smarter means working in a way that’s aligned with your purpose, values, and energy.

It’s about doing the right things, in the right order, in the right way, and at the right pace — for you.

That’s where momentum comes in.

Momentum isn’t speed. It’s direction.

It’s that feeling of ease and flow when everything in your business is pulling in the same direction — your vision, your actions, your energy, and your results.

If you’ve lost that sense of flow, here’s why.

Pillar 1: Alignment — “Hard Work” Only Works When it’s the Right Work

If your business feels heavy or draining, it might not be that you’re tired, and it’s certainly not because you’re not good enough. It’s more likely that you’re out of alignment.

You can’t build momentum doing things that don’t feel right for you. Because if things feel wrong or hard, we will always struggle to keep doing it.

Alignment means your goals, strategies, and daily actions reflect your True Value: your skills, experiences and brilliance, focused on the difference you want to make and your actions designed for the way you naturally work best.

When you’re aligned, progress feels lighter.

You stop comparing yourself to others, and start moving at your own pace.

Ask yourself:

  • Are my goals truly mine, or are they what I think I “should” be aiming for?
  • Do my daily tasks reflect the kind of business I actually want to build?
  • Where am I saying ‘yes’ when I really want to say ‘no’?

In
Momentum Month, we start here, realigning your goals with your values and strengths, so you can build momentum that actually lasts.

Pillar 2: Clarity — You Can Only Move Faster if You Know Where You’re Going

Most people aren’t short on motivation. They’re short on clarity.

They say things like:

“I don’t know what to focus on.”

“I have so many ideas, but I’m not sure which one to start with.”

Without clarity, your energy gets scattered. You end up being busy instead of productive. And you are susceptible to distractions and ‘shiny object syndrome’.

Clarity is knowing what truly matters and why.

It’s being able to answer, “What’s the one thing that would make the biggest difference right now?”

When you have clarity, every action becomes easier, because you know where it leads and why it matters.

Ask yourself:

  • What does success look like for me this month, not someday?
  • Which activities genuinely move me closer to that?
  • What can I let go of that isn’t serving my bigger goal?

In Momentum Month, you’ll get clear on what matters most, so every day feels purposeful and productive.

Pillar 3: Focus — Do Less But Better, to Achieve More

One of the biggest reasons entrepreneurs struggle to grow is because they try to do everything at once.

It’s not a lack of effort holding them back. It’s a lack of focus.

Real progress comes from doing fewer things better.

It’s about identifying the handful of actions that make the biggest impact, and prioritising these so they have your full attention.

That’s what ‘working smarter’ really means.

Ask yourself:

  • Where am I spreading myself too thin?
  • What would happen if I gave myself permission to focus on one goal for 30 days?
  • Which 20% of my activities create 80% of my results?

In
Momentum Month, you’ll find your focus, so you can make meaningful progress without overwhelm.

Pillar 4: Support — You’re Not Meant to Do this Alone

Many of us start our businesses because we value independence and freedom.

But somewhere along the way, that can turn into isolation.

And when you’re doing everything alone, self-doubt and overthinking can set in making every decision feel harder and heavier.

Support isn’t a luxury. It’s a growth strategy.

It gives you perspective when you’re too close to the problem, and encouragement when doubt creeps in.

Ask yourself:

  • Who helps me see things clearly when I feel stuck?
  • Who challenges me to keep going when I start to lose confidence?
  • How might I grow faster if I didn’t have to figure everything out on my own?

In Momentum Month, you’ll have a small supportive group that understands your challenges and helps you move through them, without judgment or pressure.

Pillar 5: Accountability — The Bridge Between Intention and Action

You’ve probably experienced this before: you start something strong, but over time your motivation fades.

That’s not because you lack discipline. And it’s not because you’re lazy. It’s because you lack accountability.

Research shows you’re 65% more likely to achieve a goal when you share it with someone.

That number jumps to 95% when you check in regularly!

Accountability turns your “I should” into “I did.”

Ask yourself:

  • Who’s helping me stay on track right now?
  • How often do I celebrate my small wins?
  • What would change if I had someone checking in each week?

Momentum Month combines gentle accountability with clarity and support so every day you stay focused, consistent and confident.

Putting It All Together — Building Lasting Momentum

When you combine these five pillars: Alignment, Clarity, Focus, Support and Accountability you create lasting Momentum.

Momentum isn’t about pushing harder.

It’s about creating a rhythm of progress that feels natural, aligned, exciting and sustainable.

It’s the difference between constantly pushing hard and chasing your goals and calmly achieving them and welcoming the results.

And once you have it, everything else in your business becomes easier:

✅ You know where to put your energy.
✅ You follow through on what matters.
✅ You grow your business without losing yourself in the process.
