You may have heard the terms coach and coaching before. It's commonly used in the world of sports. But can a coach be beneficial to you in your business?

Athletes don't hire a coach because they don't understand their craft. They hire them to help them excel in their chosen sport.

Roger Federer, for example, is one of the best in the world at what he does. His coach is not better at tennis than him. Instead, his coach plays an invaluable role in feeding back to him what he can't see for himself, so he can continue to grow and improve.

Business coaching is similar.

Most business owners are already experts in their field. But can still benefit enormously from having a dedicated business coach by their side as they build, grow and scale their business and impact. And grow into a confident leader of their business and industry.

So, what exactly is a business coach?

When you choose to hire a business coach, their goal is to become the best investment you make in your business.

They will ensure that you have the right business model and strategy for your goals. Help you gain clarity of direction, and stay focused on your goals.

Your business coach, also known as a mentor and accountability partner, will be your eyes and ears, helping to identify and remove barriers to your success, and identify opportunities you may have missed, so you can build a stable and profitable business. As a trusted advisor, business leaders can benefit greatly from the guidance and support of a business coach, for personal development as well as business growth.

Business owners are often experts in their field. But may lack some business, marketing or leadership experience. Or perhaps don't feel fully confident that they are in the right place doing the right thing. This is where a business coach can really help.

As well as helping to remove roadblocks, she can offer a fresh perspective and help move you from inaction to action. In short, a business coach is an essential investment in yourself and your business.

A coach is an investment in yourself and your business

Your business coach will observe what you do, and be your eyes and ears - highlighting areas for improvement and growth. She will ensure you make steady progress towards your income and impact goals - while also keeping your health and lifestyle in focus too.

Business coaching is a process. Most coaching relationships start with a short-term commitment, perhaps over 3-months. But your relationship may continue for many more months or even years. It all depends on where your business is today, and where you want it to be in the future.

Your business coach will provide you with 'on-the-job' business education, as well as feedback, guidance, support and accountability as you progress towards your goals.

Most business coaches also understand that success is about a lot more than having a perfect plan; it's also about having the systems and processes in place that make sense for you and your clients. It also relies on having confidence and the right mindset to take the consistent action that's needed to take your business to the next level.

With the help of a business coach, you can gain valuable insights and strategies that have led to countless success stories for business owners. A coach is an investment in yourself and your business, providing the clarity, strategy, and accountability needed to reach your goals and achieve success.

Some of the most wildly successful companies and entrepreneurs on the planet rely on these services to achieve massive results and become talkably different from the competition.

A business coach will help you gain clarity of direction, stay focused on your strategy and identify and remove barriers to your success so you can build a stable and profitable business.

Building your success mindset

Knowing what to do is one thing. Doing it is something else. Often we have outdated beliefs, habits or behaviours that hold us back.

Mindset is the cornerstone of success for female entrepreneurs. It shapes how you perceive and navigate challenges and respond to opportunity. A positive, growth-oriented mindset fosters innovation, perseverance, and adaptability, empowering you to overcome obstacles and thrive in the competitive business landscape.

Your business coach will help you cultivate a success mindset and self-belief, so you can flow freely towards your goals.

It’s hard to succeed in business on your own

There are always so many unknowns and ‘what if?s’ when running your own business. If you don’t have someone to help you reflect on where you are and what works, to focus (and refocus) on your core strategy and keep you growing forward, then it’s easy to feel like you are always in the early stages of business - even if you’re several years in!

This was the case for Maria Macedo, a passionate and dedicated neuroscientist who is inspiring children to grow in confidence and develop a love of learning and science via her Cool Science classes.

Before she began working with me, Maria was feeling frustrated. While she had the PhD-backed qualifications to teach science, Maria lacked business experience and confidence.

“I was at a stage where I was feeling frustrated for having very few clients, I felt insecure about my value and felt lost in respect to what I could do in order to save my business. Moreover, I started to believe that maybe the ‘others’ were right, and what I was doing would never become a business from which I could make a viable living,” said Maria.

Fortunately, Maria listened to the advice of a close friend who recommend she look for a business coach. Driven by her frustration, and the feeling that others were not taking her business goals seriously, Maria joined my signature Value Whispering Blueprint group coaching experience.

Maria joined the programme with a clear vision of what she wanted to achieve with Cool Science, and has learned the necessary skills to communicate clearly and with confidence exactly what it is she delivers for her dream clients – a program of fun science activities that nurture curiosity and promote intellectual development.

Maria now says, “I have learned to put myself in the shoes of my clients. I can now better understand their doubts and fears and I am therefore communicating with more clarity and I am able to easily adapt my service to my client’s wishes and needs so that they feel valued”.

How do you know when you are ready to hire a business coach?

It's never too soon to hire a business coach to guide you in developing your business. They can save you time, money and wasted effort. And they are not just for large businesses either. 'Solopreneurs' have as much, if not more, to gain from the support and guidance they can offer.

For example, you might want to hire a business coach to help you create your business framework before you start your business, or in your first six-months. This will definitely give you the edge as you'll start with a clear strategy and plan, as well as the clarity and confidence to navigate the rocky early stages of business.

You should definitely consider a business coach when you feel stuck or overwhelmed with the direction of your business, when you're seeking clarity on your goals, or when you want to accelerate growth but lack a clear strategy.

Additionally, if you're facing challenges in leadership, team management, or decision-making, a coach can provide invaluable guidance.

Early-stage entrepreneurs can benefit from a coach's expertise in navigating the complexities of starting a business, while established business owners may seek a coach to refine strategies, improve performance, or overcome stagnation. Ultimately, the right time is when you're committed to growth, willing to take different actions, and open to learning.

Finding the right business coach

If you are not where you want to be in business it's time to consider hiring a coach.

Whether you feel overwhelmed, doubtful, lacking in skills or direction, you need a business coach. But where do you start?

Working with a coach is a deeply personal engagement and commitment. On some level, you’re buying into who she is and why she does what she does. If she's going to be your trusted partner and guide, you need to know where she's coming from, what drives her and what her experiences are.

Each business coach has different areas of expertise based on their background and experience so it’s worth looking around for someone who inspires you, who you can relate to and who is strong in the areas you want to develop.

Coaches offer a free discovery call. Once you make a shortlist of potential coaches, I recommend booking a call with two or three business coaches. This will help you understand more about their personality, background and approach. Reading testimonials from previous clients can also give you insight into the style and effectiveness of their coaching. You will then be in a stronger position to choose the coach that feels like the right fit for you.

Before your discovery call, take some time to think through what you want to achieve, and what you feel is holding you back. Take stock of your skills and gaps. And what budget you have available. What would you like a coaching relationship to do for you.

Keep an open mind during your discussions, a good coach is likely to have some different views on what will help take you forward towards your goals. This is a good thing, as long as it feels right for your brand and values. After all, doing more of the same is unlikely to yield the results for your business that you desire.

The Value Whispering coaching approach

Before becoming a business coach, I spent two decades studying and working in marketing, communication and sales. And close to a decade as an advisor to large organisations and leaders in their communications, visibility and employee engagement.

However, I noticed that many small business owners, particularly those with a service based business like coaches, consultants and freelancers, where struggling. Not because they weren't amazing at what they did. But because they struggled to communicate the True Value of what they offered. And if your prospective clients don't get you, they won't book you.

If your prospective clients don't get you, they won't book you. The key is to know your True Value, and weave this through your communications, marketing and client experience.

So I pivoted my business to help service-based business owners identify their True Value, package this into a unique and transformative experience for their clients, and create an authentic marketing plan and sales process. So they can have a powerful impactful and a business that matters.

I brought together my decades of study and practical experience, as well as my mindset coaching tools, to become a business coach for female entrepreneurs with a service based business. Though today, I'm better known as The Value Whisperer.

My coaching is focused on helping women build a business that will give them the freedom to live life on their terms, master their mindset and upgrade their business skills and understanding, setting them up for a lifetime of success.

I'm passionate about helping women communicate their true value with confidence, and build a business they believe in - I've felt the pain and frustration that comes from having a business that doesn't work for you.

In my first business, I found that while I had a constant stream of high-paying clients, my work didn't match of dream of empowering women to lead more fulfilling lives. As a result, my business model and clients didn't fill me with joy, and I came close to burn out.

This is where I now help others business owners. Helping them find the right balance between work and life, focus on the right business model, strategy and niche, so they can enjoy a fulfilling and meaningful business.

How I feel today helping women confidently build and grow a successful business doing what they love, is completely different. I can't wait to get stuck into my work each day. And that's the result I want for all my clients. There's nothing more satisfying that hearing that my coaching has helped them achieve that.

Like this message from Business Strategist, Alena Paturaud:

"I’ve spent a fair share of time figuring out on my own my offer and messaging with my first project. This time around, with my second business, I decided that I want to skip the trial and error phase and run successful business as soon as possible. I turned to Melitta, who I’ve been following on social media for 2 years. After few sessions with her I felt so empowered, motivated and confident about my business!! She helped me to map out a clear offer and product suite, and then create a powerful, meaningful pitch for each one. She seriously saved me about 2-years of hard work and error.”

Business coaching is for everyone, but...

It’s highly advisable for everyone who is serious about building a business to have a coach by their side. This will help them build a strong business and achieve their goals in the shortest timeframe.

Having said that, not everyone has what it takes to make an investment in business coaching work for them. You need to be committed and be willing to learn, be challenged and take consistent action. Do this, and you'll soon see yourself and your business results transform.

Of course, doing new and different things is not always easy or comfortable – and that’s why you have a coach to help you. But it’s essential if you are serious about your success and making an impact with your business.

Not everyone has what it takes to make an investment in business coaching work for them. You need to be willing to be challenged, take action, and grow.
