The Hero’s Journey vs The Heroine's Journey

(…and why this changes how your marketing connects)

There’s a moment many business owners experience quietly, when something about their message just doesn’t feel quite right.

You’re showing up, doing the work, trying the strategies that seem to make sense. So on the surface, everything looks fine.

But underneath, there’s a different feeling.

A sense that something is missing.
That what you’re doing isn’t quite landing in the way you hoped.
That perhaps… you don’t fully fit the mould you’re trying to follow.

And when that feeling appears, it’s very natural to start looking outward.

To search for answers.
For different tactics.
For that one thing that will help you finally make things click.

But what if that instinct is leading you in the wrong direction?

And the real solution lies within?

In this episode of The Art of Value Whispering Podcast, I explore the difference between the hero’s journey and the heroine’s journey… and why understanding the subtle difference between the two storytelling arcs can completely change how your marketing connects.

And not just with your clients, but with your own experiences too.

‍Because not every journey is about proving your worth out there.

Some are about remembering what already exists within!

If your marketing has ever felt heavier than it should… or like you’re trying to follow something that doesn’t quite fit… this may help you understand why.

The Story Most of Us Have Been Taught

The hero’s journey is familiar.

We’ve seen it in films, books, and stories our whole lives. It’s almost become the default way we understand growth and success.

Something happens. A challenge appears. There’s a problem that needs solving.

And the hero steps forward.

‍They leave what’s familiar, meet a guide who helps them gather tools and learn new skills. These new skills are then tested by the obstacles along the way, until they master them and eventually return, having proven themselves through what they’ve achieved.

It’s a compelling story.

And in many ways, it makes sense.

But if you pause for a moment, you’ll notice something important.

This journey is driven by something external.

Some external force causes the hero’s life or environment to change or come under threat, and he must search ‘out there’ for the tools to fix or overcome the challenge. Often there is something to win.

The hero’s worth is measured by the outcome.

‍In business, this way of thinking can quietly shape how we approach our marketing.

We start to believe that if things aren’t working, the answer must be out there somewhere. And we go on an epic quest to find that better strategy, smarter funnel, or the holy grail of a tactic that will bring instant success.

The Journey Your Clients Are Actually On

But for many of your clients… that’s not the journey they’re on at all.

Their starting point isn’t a clear external problem.

It’s something much quieter than that.

It’s a feeling.

A sense that something isn’t working the way it should.
That they don’t quite belong where they are anymore.
That something needs to shift… even if they can’t fully explain what.

It’s not always obvious to others.

And often, it’s not something they can clearly see, understand or articulate themselves.

‍But it’s real and it’s present.

And it’s in this moment – this quiet internal turning point – that the heroine’s journey begins.

The Myth That Keeps You Positioning Yourself as the Hero

When we don’t recognise this difference, it’s easy to fall into a common pattern in our marketing.

We position ourselves as the one with the answers.

The expert who solves the problem.
The person who can fix what isn’t working.

‍But when your client is on a heroine’s journey… something about that feels slightly off.

Because they’re not sitting there thinking, “I just need the right solution.”

They’re sitting with something deeper.

A sense of disconnection.
A quiet doubt.
A feeling they can’t quite put words to.

And what they’re really looking for isn’t a fix.

It’s understanding.

“You are not the hero or heroine of your client’s story. You are the guide who helps them see what was already there.” — Melitta Campbell

What the Heroine's Journey Looks Like

The heroine’s journey doesn’t begin with a clear plan.

There’s no obvious map or structured path to follow.

Instead, there’s a decision, a quiet internal drive to step away from what no longer fits.

And from there, the journey unfolds differently.

Not through a checklist of steps, but through lived experience.

Moments that challenge how they see themselves.
Situations that stretch their thinking.
Realisations that arrive gradually, often when they least expect them.

And slowly, something begins to shift.

‍Not because they’ve found something new…

But because they’ve started to see what was already there.

That they’re not missing what they thought they were missing. In fact, they aren’t missing anything at all! They already have the value, the capability and all the tools they need.‍

They just couldn’t see it yet. So what was missing was simply the belief in their own abilities.

Just how in the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy already had the ruby slippers that would transport her home, she just needed to belief it.

How in Frozen, Elsa didn’t need to control her power, she needed to love and accept it.

And how Moana didn’t need to defeat anything, she needed to recognise what was missing was already inside her.

Why Your Role Is to Guide, Not Lead

When you begin to understand this, your marketing naturally softens.

You’re no longer trying to prove your expertise and push your specific solution, but creating space for depth and recognition.

You’re no longer leading from:
“Here’s what you need to do.”

But from:
“I see where you are.”

And that shift changes how your message feels to the person reading it.

Because instead of feeling like they’re being guided through a process, they feel they are being understood within a structured experience.

That’s exactly why Value Whispering is different. Because instead of adding a tool or process that will transform your marketing. It gently guides you in reflecting on how you want to be, and the journey you can guide your clients through that only you can. So your marketing becomes a natural extension of who you are and how you help.

It’s created from within.

When Your Marketing Starts to Truly Connect

You’ll notice the shift in small, meaningful ways.

Someone reads your words and pauses.

Because something about it feels familiar.

They might say:

“That’s exactly how I’ve been feeling.”

Or:

“I didn’t know how to explain it… but that’s it.”

That’s resonance.

Not because your message is louder.

But because it’s more true.

And that resonance sparks a meaningful relationship, even if that person never comes a paying client, they will still come away from your content or experience transformed.

That’s a very different kind of marketing. A kind that makes you feel proud of the work you do and the content you create. And that naturally attracts the right people into your offer eco-system.

Marketing That Comes From Within

This is where everything becomes simpler… and more powerful at the same time.

Because instead of constantly looking outward for the next thing to try…

You begin to look inward.

To your own journey.
Your perspective.
The way you naturally support your clients.

And how that connects with what your clients are really experiencing beneath the surface.

This is your Value Sweet Spot.

And when your marketing comes from there, it doesn’t feel forced.

It feels clear.
Grounded.
Sustainable.

A Final Thought to Reflect On

Not every journey is about becoming more.

Some journeys are about coming home to who you already are.

And when you understand that…

Your marketing stops being something you perform.

And becomes something you express.

So instead of asking:

“What should I be doing?”

Try asking:

What would feel true… for me, and for the people I want to support?

Because that’s where real connection begins.
