The Art of Value Whispering podcast
When Your Business Evolves Because You Do
Business evolution is often described as a pivot, but more often it’s a gradual return to something that has been true all along.
In this episode of The Art of Value Whispering, I’m joined by Christine Gritmon personal branding expert, former journalist and founder of Higher Voltage, to explore what it really looks like to evolve your work without losing your credibility, your confidence, or yourself.to explore what it really looks like to evolve your work without losing your credibility, your confidence, or yourself.
What emerged was not a conversation about reinvention for reinvention’s sake, but about recognising the thread that has always been there and having the courage to follow it.
Christine’s journey is a powerful reminder that growth often looks less like a sharp turn and more like a widening path.
Join me in this episode as we explore how your business can evolve naturally as you deepen your understanding of your own value.

“When something comes easily to you, that doesn’t mean it’s easy. It means you’re good at it.” — Christine Gritmon
Your value has a longer story than your current offer
Christine didn’t wake up one morning and decide to “pivot.” Her work has evolved from journalism, to social media, to personal branding, to now creating spaces and events for solopreneurs.
On paper, that can look scattered. In reality, the through-line is crystal clear.
At every stage, her work has been about helping people with real talent be seen, heard, and valued.
This is something I see again and again with my clients. We often assume our value is defined by the service we currently sell, when in fact it runs much deeper than that. When you step back and look at your full journey, patterns begin to emerge that are far more revealing than any job title.
Your value didn’t suddenly appear when you started your business. It has been developing for years, sometimes decades.
When something feels “easy,” we often dismiss it
One of the most powerful moments in our conversation was Christine’s insight into what she calls the competence fallacy.
When something comes easily to us, we often assume it can’t be valuable. We associate value with effort, struggle, and complexity, so the things we do naturally get overlooked or minimised.
But ease is not a sign that something lacks value. More often, it’s a sign that you’re skilled.
Many business owners underestimate their most powerful gifts precisely because they don’t feel hard-won. And yet, those gifts are often the very things other people find transformational.
If you’ve ever thought, “Anyone could do this,” it may be worth questioning that assumption.
“Your personal brand shouldn’t be built around what you do. It should be built around who you are and the gifts you bring wherever you go.”— Christine Gritmon
Being good at something is not the same as being fulfilled by it
Another important distinction Christine made is between:
- what you can do
- what you’re willing to do
- and what you actually want to do
This is where many capable, high-performing business owners get stuck.
You become known for work you’re good at. It pays well. People keep asking for it. And slowly, your business fills up with tasks that drain you rather than energise you.
That doesn’t mean those skills are wrong or wasted. It means they may no longer belong at the centre of your work.
Value Whispering is not about abandoning your strengths. It’s about choosing which ones deserve the spotlight.
Personal branding starts on the inside, not the outside
Christine describes her approach as inside-out branding, and it aligns beautifully with how I see value-driven marketing.
Your brand is not your logo, your colour palette, or even how visible you are. Those are expressions, not foundations.
A strong personal brand is built by understanding:
- the gifts you bring into every situation
- the work that lights you up
- how you naturally show up when you feel aligned
Only then does it make sense to think about how others experience you.
When people start with “How do I want to be perceived?” without grounding that in who they are, branding feels uncomfortable and performative. When it starts from within, it becomes magnetic.
Your brand is not something you manufacture. It’s something you allow to become clearer.
Evolution doesn’t mean starting from scratch
One fear that often holds people back is the idea that changing direction means undoing everything they’ve built.
Christine’s story shows the opposite.
Because her work has always centred on individuals and their value, each evolution made sense to the people who already trusted her. They could follow her because the essence stayed the same.
This is an important reframe.
You don’t need to be boxed in by what you were known for five years ago. You also don’t need to throw it away. When your evolution is anchored in your true value, it becomes an expansion, not a contradiction.
A Final Thought to Reflect On
If you stepped back and looked at your entire journey, not just your current business, what patterns of value would you see repeating?
And what might change if you allowed those patterns, rather than your job title or offer, to guide what comes next?
