Daring to Be Seen in the Media

I hear it all the time.

"I'd love to be featured in the media, but I'm not ready yet."

Or:

"I don't really have anything interesting to say."

Or perhaps the one that sits underneath both of those:

"Who am I to put myself forward?"

If you've ever found yourself thinking something similar, you're not alone.

In fact, it's one of the biggest reasons talented, experienced, values-led business owners remain invisible to the very people they could help most.

That's why I was delighted to welcome PR expert Jo Swannn, founder of Chocolate PR and author of Celebrating You with PR, onto the podcast.

Because Jo has spent more than two decades helping business owners find the confidence to step into the spotlight in a way that feels authentic, aligned and true to who they are.

And what struck me most about our conversation wasn't the PR strategy.

It was the mindset shift behind it.

Because before we can be seen, we have to believe we deserve to be seen.

"Being seen for the sake of your audience is a massive change in mindset." — Jo Swann

Why so many brilliant people stay invisible

One of the biggest myths about media visibility is that you have to be exceptional before anyone will pay attention.

You need more experience.

More clients. More credentials.

A bigger audience. A more impressive story.

At least, that's what many people tell themselves.

But Jo challenged that assumption head-on.

The entrepreneurs she works with are often highly experienced professionals who have spent years building expertise, leading teams, solving problems and creating results.

Yet when they start their own business, something strange happens.

They suddenly forget everything that came before.

They look at their new business and think:

"I've only just started."

As if the decades of experience, knowledge and wisdom that brought them here no longer count.

But they do count.

In fact, they may be the very thing that makes your voice valuable.

Because your business didn't appear in isolation.

It's the result of everything you've learned, experienced and overcome along the way.

And that's often where your most powerful story lives.

Your story matters more than you think

One of the insights I loved most from our conversation was Jo's reminder that journalists don't necessarily want businesses.

They want stories.

Human stories.

Stories of change, resilience, of lessons learned.

Stories that help people see themselves in someone else's journey.

The challenge is that we often dismiss our own experiences because they feel ordinary to us.

We think:

"That's just what happened."

"That's not particularly interesting."

"Everyone goes through that."

But what feels ordinary to you may be exactly what someone else needs to hear.

Your journey from corporate life into entrepreneurship.

The challenge that inspired you to start your business.

The obstacle you overcame.

The lesson you learned the hard way.

The moment everything changed.

These are often the stories that create connection. And not because they're dramatic, but because they're relatable.

And connection and resonance has always been at the heart of meaningful visibility.

"Your story isn't ordinary. It's the very thing that helps people connect with you." – Jo Swann

Visibility isn't about ego

This was perhaps the most important theme running through the entire conversation.

Many thoughtful business owners feel uncomfortable being visible because they worry it feels self-promotional.

They don't want to become the loudest voice in the room.

They don't want attention for attention's sake.

They don't want to appear arrogant.

I completely understand that.

Many of the entrepreneurs I work with feel exactly the same way.

But Jo offered a powerful reframe.

What if visibility isn't about you?

What if it's about the people you're here to help?

When we focus solely on ourselves, visibility can feel uncomfortable.

But when we focus on the people who need our support, expertise and guidance, something shifts.

Showing up becomes an act of service.

Sharing your message becomes an act of generosity.

Speaking up becomes a way of helping people find the solution they've been searching for.

And suddenly visibility feels very different.

Not louder.

Just more meaningful.

Finding your authentic voice is a journey

Another reason many people hesitate to put themselves forward is because they're still trying to figure out how they want to show up.

They worry they haven't found their authentic voice yet.

But what if finding your voice isn't something that happens before visibility?

What if visibility is part of how you discover it?

Jo shared her own experience of moving from a traditional PR agency into the online business world.

Despite decades of experience, she found herself questioning how she fit into a completely different environment.

The confidence she'd built in one setting didn't automatically transfer to another.

And I think many of us can relate to that.

As our businesses evolve, we're continually being invited to evolve too.

We refine our message.

We gain clarity.

We become more comfortable expressing what matters most.

And with every conversation, article, podcast interview and piece of content, we learn a little more about who we are and how we want to communicate.

It's not a destination.

It's a process.

A beautiful one.

"You don't need ten years in business before you can be seen as an expert. Your experience already has value." – Jo Swann

You may be more ready than you think

One of the stories Jo shared genuinely surprised me.

She spoke about clients who had been featured in national media before they'd even launched their businesses.

Not because they were famous, had thousands of followers or decades of business ownership behind them. But because they had expertise, life experience, knowledge, and a perspective worth sharing.

It's such an important reminder.

Expertise isn't created the day your business launches.

It's built throughout your life, career, experiences, challenges, learning and work. In was created by the journey you’ve lived that has made you who you are today.

The business simply becomes the vehicle through which you share it.

So perhaps the question isn't:

"Am I ready?"

Perhaps the better question is:

"What am I waiting for?"

Start smaller than you think

If the idea of media visibility feels overwhelming, Jo offered some wonderfully practical advice.

Start local.

Many business owners dismiss local media because they assume their audience isn't local.

But local media can be one of the easiest and most effective places to begin.

It allows you to build confidence. To practice sharing your story. Gain credibility, and create momentum.

Often, those opportunities lead to bigger ones as many national journalists regularly monitor local publications. And the way the media is structured means that stories get syndicated, so local visibility can compound into global recognition.

But perhaps even more importantly, every time you put yourself out there, you strengthen your own belief that your voice belongs in the conversation.

And that's invaluable.

The real cost of waiting

Towards the end of our conversation, Jo shared something that I think many business owners need to hear.

While waiting may feel safe - it comes at a cost.

Every month you stay hidden is a month your ideal clients struggle to find you.

Every opportunity you decline creates space for someone else to step forward.

Every time you tell yourself you're not ready, you're delaying the impact you could be making.

And in today's world, where AI, search engines, podcasts and media platforms are constantly looking for trusted voices and credible experts, visibility matters more than ever.

Not because visibility itself is the goal, but because visibility creates opportunities for connection.

And connection is where transformation begins.

A final thought to reflect on

If you can resonate and have been waiting to put yourself out there, let me gently remind you that there is space for you, and people want to hear your stories.

You don't need to be louder.

You don't need to be someone else.

You don't need to have everything figured out.

You simply need to take the next step.

Because somewhere, someone is looking for exactly the perspective, experience and guidance that only you can offer.

And they can't find you if you're hiding.

Perhaps it's time to let yourself be seen.
