You Don't Need to Become Someone Else to Be Successful

One of the biggest misconceptions about confidence is that it's something we have to develop before we can take the next step.

I see it all the time with the brilliant women I work with.

They're experienced, knowledgeable and genuinely care about helping people. Yet they still question whether they're confident enough to speak up, put themselves forward or lead in a way that feels true to them.

It's easy to understand why.

We're surrounded by examples of leadership that appear louder, faster and more visible than feels natural for many of us. After a while, it's easy to assume that's simply what success requires.

That's why I invited leadership coach, Ruth Andermatt, onto the podcast.

Ruth has spent decades helping women step into senior leadership positions while remaining true to themselves. From leading a team of 70 men as the only female director in corporate Canada to now coaching women through leadership transitions, she has learnt something many of us need reminding of.

Real leadership isn't about becoming someone new.

It's about remembering who you already are.

"If I can lead myself, I can lead the world." — Ruth Andermatt.

How often do we ignore what we already know?

One comment Ruth made really caught my attention.

She said that coming into your power isn't something you need to learn. It's something you need to remember.

I loved that.

As business owners, we're constantly looking for the next answer, the next strategy, the next course or certification. And while learning matters, I’m a big fan of life-long learning, too often we overlook the experience we've already earned.

You've built your business.

You've helped clients.

You've solved problems that once felt impossible.

You've learnt lessons that nobody else could teach you because they came through your own experiences.

Yet when it's time to write a post, raise your prices or speak about your work, it's surprisingly easy to forget all of that and start questioning yourself instead.

I see it all the time, where women who are incredibly capable suddenly become hesitant the moment they need to talk about their own value.

Not because they lack expertise, but because they've lost sight of, or trust in, that expertise over time.

We spend far too much energy trying to fit someone else's idea of success

One of the stories Ruth shared perfectly illustrated this.

Early in her corporate career she was told to dismiss one of her managers because senior leadership had decided he wasn't the right fit, but instead of following instructions she trusted her own judgement.

She sat down with him, coached him and gave him the opportunity to prove what he was capable of.

Within three months he had become the highest-performing branch manager in Canada.

I couldn't help thinking how easily that story could have gone differently if Ruth had simply followed convention.

Sometimes the bravest thing we can do isn't speaking louder. It's trusting our own instincts when they point us in a different direction.

The same is true in business. There is no shortage of advice telling us how to market, how to sell and how to grow.

Some of it is excellent, and some of it simply isn't designed for people like us.

If you're naturally thoughtful, reflective and relationship-focused, trying to force yourself into someone else's marketing style is exhausting.

Eventually, you stop sounding like yourself altogether.

"Neutral is your greatest ally." — Ruth Andermatt

Leadership starts long before anyone follows you

One idea we explored during the conversation was self-leadership.

It's a phrase we hear quite often, but I don't think we always stop to consider what it means. For me, it starts with paying attention to the stories we're telling ourselves.

Do we believe our ideas are worth sharing?

Do we trust ourselves to make good decisions?

Are we leading from our own values, or constantly looking for reassurance that someone else approves?

Those questions don't just shape how we lead, they shape how we market our businesses too.

Every time we second-guess our message or water down our opinions because we're worried about how they'll be received, we're handing our confidence over to someone else.

That's rarely where our best work comes from.

Your dream clients don't need another expert

One of the reasons I care so much about helping people uncover their Value Sweet Spot is because clarity changes the way you show up.

When you're clear about the value you bring, you stop feeling as though you need to prove yourself. You stop trying to sound more impressive, and stop chasing every new marketing trend, because you know what you want to be known for.

That confidence doesn't come from having all the answers. It comes from understanding yourself well enough to communicate your value with honesty.

Ironically, that's often what makes people trust you.

Not because you're perfect.

Because you're real.

"Stop performing. Start leading."  — Ruth Andermatt

The lesson I hope you'll take away

Towards the end of our conversation, Ruth said something else that has stayed with me.

She reminded us that women are often taught to put themselves last. To keep giving, to keep coping, to keep proving.

Perhaps that's why so many talented business owners find it difficult to recognise their own strengths. They're so busy looking after everyone else that they rarely stop to acknowledge how far they themselves have already come.

That's the invitation this episode offers us: to pause long enough to recognise the value that already exists in the experience, wisdom and perspective we've gained over a lifetime.

Because when you trust yourself, something interesting happens.

You stop trying so hard to convince other people to trust you too.

And that quiet confidence is often what your dream clients have been looking for all along.

A final thought

If you've been wondering whether you need to be more confident before you put yourself out there, perhaps the better question is whether you've been giving enough credit to the person you've already become.

Your experience, your perspective and your values aren't things to hide until you feel "ready". They're the very things that help your dream clients recognise they've found the right person.

When you stop trying to lead, market or build your business someone else's way, you create space to do it in a way that feels both authentic and sustainable.

And in my experience, that's where the real confidence begins.
