When Fear Isn’t the Problem, But the Invitation
Fear has a quiet way of showing up in business.
Not as panic or drama, but as hesitation, as waiting until things feel clearer, as telling yourself you need more time, more confidence, or more certainty before you take the next step.
For many thoughtful, values-led business owners, fear doesn’t feel emotional at all. It feels practical. Sensible. Even responsible.
In this episode of The Art of Value Whispering Podcast, I’m joined by Mark Franklin, a business coach, speaker and author to explore why fear is so common for business owners who care deeply about doing things well, and how it often appears right at the point where growth is beginning.
Mark is known for his work on the Four Fears of Business Ownership, and in our conversation, he helps gently unpack the fears that tend to shape our behaviour without us realising.
- Not fear of danger, but fear of not being ready.
- Fear of not being good enough.
- Fear of not having enough time.
- Fear of getting it wrong.
What makes these fears particularly powerful is that they rarely announce themselves as fear. They show up as believable stories that sound like facts.
“I just need to learn a bit more first.”
“Now isn’t the right moment.”
“Other people are better at this.”
Over time, these narratives can quietly keep us playing smaller than we intend, even when our desire to grow is strong.
Join me in this episode to uncover why fear isn’t a stop sign, but a signal, and how recognising it can help you grow your business with more trust, clarity and ease.

“Fear isn’t something to eradicate. It’s often proof that you’re stepping into something that matters.” — Mark Franklin
Why fear often appears at exactly the wrong moment
One of the most grounding insights Mark shares is that fear often shows up because you’re doing something that matters.
You’re stretching beyond what’s familiar.
You’re allowing your work to be seen.
You’re stepping into a new level of responsibility or visibility.
Rather than treating fear as a sign to stop, Mark invites us to meet it with curiosity. To ask questions like, What is this fear trying to protect me from? or What is this showing me about where I’m growing?
That shift, from judgement to curiosity, creates space for movement instead of paralysis.
Confidence doesn’t come first. Action does.
Another powerful reframe in this conversation is around confidence.
Many people believe confidence needs to come before action, but in reality, confidence is built through action.
Not through perfect plans or complete certainty, but through small, intentional steps taken alongside fear.
As Mark explains, confidence grows when you begin to trust your ability to navigate what shows up, rather than needing to predict everything in advance. Each step becomes evidence. And evidence reshapes belief.
“Confidence doesn’t come from knowing every answer. It comes from trusting your ability to navigate whatever shows up.”— Mark Franklin
What this means for introverted business owners
For introverted, service-based business owners, this conversation lands in a very real place, because we have a bias for thinking … which can lead to over-thinking. But thinking deeply doesn’t mean you’re stuck. And caring about alignment doesn’t mean you’re behind.
The work you need to do to manage your fears and move into momentum is to learn to recognise when reflection is supporting growth, and when it’s quietly delaying it.
It can be helpful to remind yourself that fear doesn’t mean ‘Stop’. It often means that something important is ready to expand.
A Final Thought to Reflect On
Where might fear be pointing to growth rather than danger in your business right now?
Not everything aligned feels comfortable.Sometimes, fear is simply part of the invitation to grow.
