You Don't Need Another Strategy. You Need More Permission.
(The lesson I wish I'd learned much earlier in business.)
This year marks 18 years since I started my business.
Which feels a little strange to say out loud because when I started, I never intended to become a business owner.
I was simply doing a bit of freelance work while raising my children, fully expecting I'd eventually return to the corporate world.
Clearly, that didn't happen.
Instead, one business led to another. Some worked better than I expected. Some taught me lessons the hard way. One became successful enough that, from the outside, it looked like exactly what I should be doing.
The only problem was that it wasn't.
And as I've been reflecting on those 18 years, one question keeps coming back to me:
If I could go back and give my younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?
Surprisingly, it wouldn't be a marketing strategy.
It wouldn't be a business framework.
It wouldn't even be a lesson about sales.
It would be permission.
Permission to trust myself.
Permission to stop second-guessing every decision.
Permission to build my business in a way that felt right for me rather than trying to follow someone else's idea of success.
And the more I thought about it, the more I realised that many of the women I work with aren't struggling because they lack knowledge.
They're struggling because they're waiting for permission too.

The Search for the Missing Piece
When something isn't working in your business, it's natural to start looking for answers.
I've done it myself.

Not because any of those things are wrong. I've learned enormous amounts from some of them.
But sometimes the search itself becomes the distraction.
Instead of helping us move forward, it keeps us circling the same decision.
We convince ourselves we need a little more clarity before we begin.
A little more confidence before we put ourselves out there.
A little more certainty before we commit.
Yet when I look back over the decisions that had the biggest impact on my business, very few of them happened because I finally found the perfect answer.
Most happened because I made a decision before I felt completely ready.
The Business That Taught Me the Wrong Lesson
One of the most valuable lessons I've learned came from a business that was actually doing quite well.
On paper, everything looked positive.
Clients were coming in. The work was enjoyable. And the business was growing.
Yet there was a persistent feeling that something wasn't quite right.
At the time, I couldn't explain it. I only knew that the more successful the business became, the further away I felt from the life and work I really wanted to create.
Walking away from something that's working is an uncomfortable decision.
Most people expect you to leave when things are failing. It's much harder to explain leaving when things are going well. Six-figures working part-time well.
But that experience taught me something important.
Success isn't simply about building a business that works.
It's about building one that works for you.
And those are not always the same thing.
What 200 Entrepreneurs Taught Me
One of the reasons I started my podcast was because I kept hearing women say things like:
"That's fine for her, but I could never do that."
Or:
"Everyone else seems to find this easier than I do."
So I started having conversations.
Lots of conversations.
Over the years, I've spoken to hundreds of women who have built successful businesses in very different ways.
Different industries.
Different personalities.
Different goals.
Different definitions of success.
But what fascinated me was how often their biggest lessons sounded remarkably similar.
Again and again, they talked about the times they ignored their instincts.
The moments they followed advice that didn't feel right.
The occasions they tried to build their business according to someone else's rules.
And almost always, those were the moments they regretted.
Not because the advice was bad.
But because it wasn't theirs.

Why Perspective Changes Everything
One of the gifts that comes with time is perspective.
Not because you suddenly become wiser or immune to mistakes.
I still make those, because I’m human.
But because you start to see patterns.
You begin to recognise that most setbacks aren't nearly as permanent as they feel in the moment.
You realise that many of the things that kept you awake at night five years ago barely register now.
And perhaps most importantly, you learn that uncertainty isn't a sign you're doing something wrong.
It's a normal part of building something meaningful.
When you're in the middle of a challenge, it's easy to believe that everyone else knows exactly what they're doing.
But after 18 years in business, and hundreds of conversations with entrepreneurs, I can confidently tell you that nobody has it all figured out.
We're all making decisions with imperfect information.
We're all learning as we go.
The difference is that some people learn to trust themselves through the uncertainty.
Less, But Better
A few years ago, my phrase for the year was "less, but better."
At the time, I thought it was a productivity goal.
Now I realise it was something much deeper.
Because when business feels overwhelming, our instinct is often to add something.
Another platform.
Another offer.
Another project.
Another priority.
Yet most of the breakthroughs I've experienced came after simplifying rather than expanding.
Not because less is automatically better.
But because clarity becomes much easier when you're not trying to do everything at once.
The challenge isn't usually deciding what to do.
It's deciding what not to do.
A Final Thought
If I could sit down with the version of me who started her business 18 years ago, I'd reassure her that she wasn't nearly as far behind as she thought she was.
I'd tell her that most of the things she was worrying about would work themselves out.
I'd remind her that mistakes aren't evidence of failure. They're often the very thing that gives you the perspective you need next.
And most of all, I'd tell her to trust herself a little sooner.
Because looking back, that was rarely the thing I lacked.
What I lacked was permission.
Permission to make the decision.
Permission to choose my own path.
Permission to stop looking for certainty and start trusting my instincts.
Perhaps that's the permission slip you need today too.
Because sometimes the breakthrough isn't another strategy.
It's finally believing you already have enough to take the next step.
