Why Being More Yourself Might Be the Smartest Marketing Strategy of All

For many business owners and experts, marketing feels like an unwelcome performance.

The want clients, so they do as the videos on YouTube tell them: work on a perfect personal brand, a polished online presence and a content strategy that keeps them visible every day. But then the client’s don’t follow as promised.

It's hardly surprising then, that so many thoughtful entrepreneurs start to wonder whether they need to become someone else to succeed.

I hear it all the time from my clients.

They know they're good at what they do. They have years of experience under their belt. And they care deeply about helping people. Yet when it comes to talking about themselves, they hesitate. They worry about saying the wrong thing, being judged or simply blending into the noise.

That's why I was so excited to welcome bestselling author and behavioural change expert, Karen Salmansohn, onto the podcast.

Karen has a wonderful way of reminding us that the answer isn't to become louder. It's to become more yourself (You-ier).

And in a world where there is more AI content in the world than human crafted content, I think that's exactly what people are craving.

Authenticity isn't just about being yourself. It's about building trust.

One of the things Karen said early in our conversation really stayed with me.

She talked about how easy it is for content to become bland. Not because people don't have interesting ideas, but because they're trying so hard to sound professional that they stop sounding like themselves.

It's something I've noticed too.

When we worry about saying the right thing, we often end up saying the same thing as everyone else.

The irony is that our dream clients aren't looking for another perfectly polished expert. They're looking for someone they can trust.

Trust grows when people get a sense of who you are, what matters to you and how you think. That doesn't mean sharing every detail of your life, but it does mean allowing your personality and perspective to come through.

Your experience is valuable.

Your stories matter.

And the way you explain an idea will never be quite the same as anyone else's.

That's what people connect with.

Your expertise is only part of the picture

I work with incredibly knowledgeable women who often assume their expertise should speak for itself.

In an ideal world, perhaps it would.

But your expertise isn't what people notice first.

Before someone decides whether to work with you, they're asking themselves something much simpler.

"Do I feel like this person understands me?"

That answer doesn't usually come from a list of qualifications or years of experience. It comes from the way you communicate: the examples you choose, the stories you tell, reflections you share and the questions you ask.

These are the things that help someone feel seen, and that's often what opens the door to trust.

Confidence grows through action

One of the biggest myths in business is that confidence comes first.

We tell ourselves, ‘If only I felt more confident, I'd post on LinkedIn, start the podcast or put myself forward to speak.’

Karen challenged that idea beautifully.

She believes confidence grows because we're willing to take action before we feel completely ready.

Looking back, I can see that's certainly been true for me.

Every time I've done something that felt slightly outside my comfort zone, whether that's speaking on stage, launching something new or reaching out to someone I'd love to interview, I've discovered it wasn't nearly as frightening as I'd imagined.

Not everything has gone perfectly.

But every experience has made the next step feel just that little bit easier.

And I’ve certainly experienced more success as a result, than if I’d continued to sit here and wait to feel confident and ready.

Why your stories matter more than your tips

One of my favourite parts of our conversation was when Karen talked about storytelling.

She encouraged us to think less about creating content and more about sharing the experiences that have shaped us.

That really resonated with me.

It's easy to assume people simply want answers, but often it's the story behind the answer that helps it stick.

When you explain how you learnt something, rather than simply telling people what to do, they get to know you as well as your expertise.

That's where relationships begin.

It's also why your content doesn't need to sound like everyone else's.

No one else has lived your experiences or learnt your lessons in quite the same way. And all your perspectives and insights are highly valuable to your dream clients, and showcase who you are and why you are the perfect solution for them.

Marketing should feel like an extension of your business

One comment Karen made made me smile because it's something I see so often.

People spend years building a business they're proud of, yet they rush their marketing because they feel they simply need to stay visible.

The result is content that ticks a box but doesn't really reflect the value of the work they do.

I think that's such a missed opportunity.

Your marketing is often someone's first experience of your business. So if you want your work to feel thoughtful, helpful and genuinely valuable, your content should feel the same.

Of course, that doesn't mean every post needs to be perfect. But it does mean that creating something that feels true to you, rather than publishing for the sake of it, is more likely to build trust and get the results you want.

"Your personality isn't a distraction from your expertise. It's often the reason people choose to trust it." – Karen Salmansohn

Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is trust your own voice

Karen shared some wonderful stories about moments when she ignored conventional advice and followed her instincts instead.

Again and again, she came back to one simple question.

"Why the hell not?"

I loved that.

Not because it's about taking reckless risks, but because it challenges the stories we tell ourselves.

What if people don't like it?

What if nobody responds?

What if I'm not ready?

They're all perfectly understandable questions.

But there's another question we could ask instead.

What might happen if I gave it a go?

Sometimes that's all the encouragement we need.

Becoming more you

Towards the end of our conversation, Karen shared a question she regularly asks herself.

Who do I need to become to create the life I want?

I think that's a much more interesting question than asking what we need to do next.

Because the way we see ourselves shapes the decisions we make every day.

If you believe you're someone who has nothing interesting to say, you'll probably stay quiet.

If you believe your voice matters, you'll start looking for opportunities to use it.

That's one of the reasons I believe so strongly in helping my clients uncover their Value Sweet Spot.

When you become clearer about the value you bring and the people you're here to help, showing up becomes so much easier.

You stop trying to sound like someone else because you no longer need to.

A final thought

If you've been feeling pressure to create more content, post more often or somehow become more visible, perhaps it's worth pausing for a moment.

Instead of asking, "What should I say?"

Try asking yourself, "What do I genuinely believe that my dream clients need to hear?"

Your answer probably won't sound like anyone else's.

And that's exactly the point.

The businesses that create lasting relationships aren't usually the loudest. They're the ones that communicate with clarity, consistency and genuine care.

When your marketing reflects who you really are, and the true value you offer, you don't need to shout louder.

You simply give the right people the chance to recognise they've found someone who understands them, to build trust, and join you for the journey.
